Spectacular Hikes/Walks

Hudson Valley Rail Trail
Although not very long, the Hudson Valley Rail Trail has a lot to offer: Fitness stations, paved pathway and grass pathway, wonderful wetland vistas, deep woods with multiple tree species, wild flowers, and if you are lucky, a little wild life--dear, beaver, fox, turkey, chipmunks, and pileated woodpeckers. At the Tony Williams Park end of the trail are public basketball and tennis courts. Trail is about 2.5 miles. Fall is fabulous here. Many kinds of trees...
Enter from Old New Paltz Rd opposite S. Chodikee Lake Road, or in Village off Commercial Ave, or from Tony Williams Park.

Shaupeneak Ridge
The Marlboro Mountains run between the Hudson River and the Shawangunks. that is where you will find the Shaupeneak Ridge Cooperative Recreational Area. In addition to panoramic views, you can skirt Louisa Pond and watch for water fowl, muskrat, beaver, osprey, and heron. There are two ways to enter this trail: Lower one is immediately after the Rail Road track on right. Upper on is off Old Post on Poppletown Road. This brings you to the lake. About 3.5 miles of trail.

Black Creek Forest Preserve
A 130 acre nature preserve featuring a 120' suspension bridge spanning the Black Creek. Fishing permitted. Trails take you to Hudson River. Large stands of hemlock and hardwood. The Wooly Adgelid pest is a severe threat to the survival of our graceful hemlocks, so you might want to enjoy them while you still can.

Stone Houses of Huguenot settlers. While not a hike, it is next to the Wallkill Valley Rail Trail and worth the visit if you are on the trial. Tours are available Tuesday - Sunday, May - October.

John Burroughs' Slabsides
Grounds are open year-round. Self-guided nature walks. (Cabin open one weekend in each of May and October.) From Route 9w, turn west at Floyd Ackert Rd (Marcel's Restaurant). Look for sign on left. The Burroughs Sanctuary is also located nearby. Lake and walking road. Birds, squirrels, plants, trees, etc.-your basic woods. Lovely, and usually, no one else there.

Enter from Huguenot Street, just south of entrance for sewage treatment plant (don't let that stop you, this is a treat). A leisurely pace takes about 40
