Italian Delis in Rhinebeck & Red Hook

[image: Rosemary Fox]Leonardo's Italian Deli: A cornucopia of goodies, from imported delicacies like special jams and artisanal olive oils to staples like polenta meal and dried fava beans. Parma hams and salamis dangle from the ceiling, wheels of cheese sit enticingly here and there, there are baskets of fresh breads, and a case of generously-proportioned desserts, including fresh cannolis and a decadent chocolate bombe filled with chocolate mousse. Also: homemade entrees from the freezer case, including sauces, soups, ravioli and other pasta. Affable owner Robert Miglino (sporting suspenders striped in the colors of the Italian flag) believes in offering free tastes of this and that (ask to try the 12-year-old aged balsamic vinegar).

Gigi Market: Laura Pensiero's marriage of Italian cuisine with fresh Hudson Valley produce has earned her a special affection among local gourmets. Besides the fresh produce and baked goods at the farm market at Greig Farm on Pitcher Lane, you can find imported prosciutto, cheeses, and other such prepared specialties as lasagnas, sauces, Tuscan beans, panini, salads, skizzas, along with gelato, tiramisu, Italian sodas and many other imported delicacies.

The Hook: The Italian-American tradition of what was once Minafra's continues at Firehouse Plaza in Red Hook under the management of Anthony Legname and his family. Besides homemade mozzarella and a growing selection of imported Italian cheeses and dry sausages, Anthony specializes in hot meals and pizzas (his family ran the original Joe's pizzeria near Vassar Hospital in Poughkeepsie).
